This afternoon, I finished reading Factotum by Charles Bukowski. I was very excited when I started reading it, but by the time I finished it I was a bit low on spirit. I don’t know was it the effect of Chinaski or it was me coming to my self! To a great extent, I felt, we were alike. Except that he frequently changed jobs, while I am stuck to one. And the courage he had to write such stuff is missing in me.
You can understand what I am taking about, only when you read the book. It is a shit load (in his language), but that is exactly something that matters. He showed the glamourless life of a struggling writer. Something, I also experienced during those days of struggle in Delhi.
I still remember those crude remarks made by the person whom I was living with and who taught me the art of film making. I have great respect for that person – for his intellect and his knowledge, but on the personal front he was a failure.
He pulled me down and called me names. I am going to write everything that he and others have done to me, in my next novel. I think that is where Chinaski would encourage me. To be blunt and candid not only to others but also to myself as well.
Chinaski also showed me how dirty and filthy woman can be. I guess none of his women were graceful. They were all fallen. In my life I have come across same kind of woman. But there are a few graceful ones too. But, the grace is there in them only as long as I am doing what they want me to do.
Indian woman are strange. They are non-ambitious. Deep down in their filthy minds, they want a handsome fuckable guy next to them, fantasising being fucked hard by them in bed, and they get wet. But, to the world, they would pose to be the sanest person around.
I also fantasize fucking beautiful ladies, who doesn't. But, in the end I want someone who is as intelligent as I am, if I am!
But there are a few ladies, and those are the few ones I am still in touch with, who can still hold their heads up with some grace. Rest of the ladies have their heads hanging down, looking at the crotches they fantasize of being fucked by at night.
Every night.
The night is getting young and the girls have started to fantasize.
I am fantasizing too!

When ever I read Bukowski, the only think that hit me is his courage and amazing attitude towards life, he seems so nonchallent, as if he hardly cares what the other guy thinks about him. This blog of yours is very close and in my 29 years of existence and whatever little I have read, i must say "courage of speaking out the truth in the simplest way" is the hardest thing to do. We all know how difficult it is to write simple English and now I must accept that it is even more difficult and challenging to write simple truth "simple dirty truth". Kudos to you, great beginning, carry on mate.
If you like Buk -- here's an interview with his former girlfriend Linda King that's pretty insightful.

I have not read Bukowski. I have nothing to say about him. But what you have said about women in general is quite revolting to me...welcome to the real world please. Why do you men always want to decide the rules of the game? If you do so why do you react when a women wins a game made by men? So what if a women is dreaming of being fucked up by a hunk? Is not it every guys dream to have a hot chick by his side everyday?????
D Writer: I never stopped you from writing what you wanna write, and why should I be not free to write what I wanna write?
I have not being judgmental of the girls. I have been judgmental of the certain girls whom I came across. And I am free to express my opinion.
And it aint matter who rules the world...men or women...what matters is do you care about the ruler? At least I dont!
I'd advise you to go through your grammar again. Bukowski definitely was particular about that. Only Langston Hughes wasn't...but that's a different story altogether.
Bukowski has inspired many of us. While he inspires the most to express themselves more freely without being pretentious (or cursing more freely rather), he also inspires few to read behind the lines and connect his words to their real meaning. Buk was never as blunt as he appeared to be. You could always connect his words to something more profound though he hardly seemed to be metaphoric.
I'll give you an example. When Bukowski wrote in a poem about writing a poem and tearing it up because "The best thing about self-rejection is that it saves that obnoxious duty from being someone else’s problem", doesn’t it hold true for a society chained in corruption and nepotism too? Bukowski was a man who spoke through himself to the millions like him in a voice that blended along theirs.
Some people hide behind the cloak of Bukowski's inspiration to intentionally write controversial poetry/prose. That's where it hurts!
I just randomly found this site by typing in bukowski, chinaski... you sound like a tool.
Thanks...Bhaskaryya. Thanks for sharing your thought. They were quite strong ones and made a lot of sense....
Hi Anonymous:
Why you hid you name?
Well, its good to see such comment on my blog, you have been quite decent compared to the one who commented on Buk himself;
"Entity3sf Sam (5/26/2007 9:30:00 PM)
No one 'Deliberately' wastes their lives. Bukowski was a miserable sob and a half-ass writer. To the person claiming him to be the best of the late 20th century - you need to get to the library more often."
